Extreme weather hits the US, tornadoes, snowstorms and record temperatures

A powerful wave of severe weather has swept across the United States, bringing tornadoes, snowstorms and extreme temperatures to various regions of the country.

Over 34 million people were placed under tornado watch, mainly in areas from Florida to New Jersey.

In the north, states like Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan have been hit by heavy snowfall, reaching up to 0.9 meters in some areas.

Authorities warn of dangerous travel conditions and very low temperatures in the coming days.

Meanwhile, the storms have caused major disruptions to air transport, with around 4,600 flights cancelled and over 11,000 delayed.

More than 400,000 households were left without power, mainly in Michigan, Virginia and North Carolina.

In the Southeast, strong winds and the risk of tornadoes have forced school closures and increased the level of emergency preparedness.

Warnings have also been issued for flash flooding and severe storms.

Meanwhile, an unusual heat wave is expected on the West Coast, with temperatures that could reach up to 42°C in Arizona, increasing the risk of heat illness and wildfires.

Authorities warn that this is one of the biggest weather events this year in the US, which could affect up to 200 million people in some states./ CNA
