Germany, Poland, Britain, France and Italy will implement as soon as possible new NATO targets on weapons and troop numbers, which the Alliance is expected to agree on, German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius pledged on Monday.
The head of NATO's Military Committee, Admiral Rob Bauer, earlier told Reuters news agency that NATO aims to make a decision on new weapons and troop targets this summer.
The Western military and political alliance has been under pressure not only after the large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022, but also internally, amid calls from United States President-elect Donald Trump to increase the level of military spending by member countries.
NATO defense ministers will try to reach an agreement on new capabilities targets several weeks before their leaders meet in The Hague on June 24-26, Dutch Admiral Rob Bauer told Reuters.
The summit in The Hague will also discuss raising NATO's existing military spending target of 2 percent of gross domestic product to 3 percent, which some experts have suggested is a possible new target. Mr. Trump, who returns to the White House on January 20, recently called for a new defense spending target of 5 percent.
Speaking after a meeting with his four counterparts in the Polish town of Nowa Wies, Mr. Pistorius welcomed NATO's decision to reach an agreement on the Alliance's new capability goals in June, rather than October as previously planned, a move he said was prompted by Germany. "This way we gain time and we can start implementing the goal much earlier," Mr. Pistorius told reporters.
At the same time, he rejected Mr. Trump's efforts to get NATO member countries to increase defense spending to 5 percent of gross domestic product, arguing that would be equivalent to more than 40 percent of Germany's total budget. French Defense Minister Sebastien Lecornu said military budgets would continue to grow, but did not give a figure for a new NATO target. "The situation is worse than during the Cold War... We can be defeated without being conquered," he said, referring to cyberattacks. /CNA
