I read 'two pages' of The Satanic Verses/Rushdies attack suspect

The man accused of murdering writer Salman Rushdie has reportedly said he only read two pages of The Satanic Verses.

Hadi Matar, 24, pleaded not guilty to charges of assaulting the writer at an event in New York last week.

In an interview for the "New York Post" from prison, Matar said that Salman "attacked Islam".

However, he has not confirmed that his actions were prompted by a religious decree issued by Iran in the 1980s.

Matar is currently being held in a New York state prison.

Salman published the controversial book, The Satanic Verses in 1988.

Muslims have been outraged by its content, saying it contains blasphemous verses.

The book's publication prompted the Iranian leader, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, to issue a religious decree in 1989 calling for the writer's death.

"I respect the Ayatollah. I think he is a fantastic man. That's all I can say about him," he said.

Matar also told the newspaper that he was "surprised" when he heard that Salman survived the attack.

"I don't like that man. I don't think he is a good person", he was quoted as saying.

The writer's family has said that despite the injuries that have changed his life, Rushdie continues to maintain his "sense of humor"./REL
