Lavrov: Moscow in contact with Serbia regarding NIS ownership
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Moscow is in contact with its "Serbian friends" regarding the fate of the ownership of Serbian oil company NIS, which was placed under US sanctions.

On the other hand, Serbian President Aleksandar Vu?i?, after a meeting with the Russian Ambassador to Serbia, Bocan-Kharchenko, said that he has requested "from Russian friends" the initiation of consultations and holding meetings on the functioning of the NIS in the future.

"(We also discussed) finding the best solution in mutual interest, while preserving the partnership and friendly relations between Serbia and the Russian Federation," Vu?i? wrote on his Instagram account on Tuesday.

Vucic said on Friday that following new United States sanctions on Russia's oil sector, Russia's Gazprom Neft will be given a 45-day deadline to exit ownership of NIS.

This deadline also applies for Serbia to complete "the signing of any agreement or contract with the Russian side."

After that, as he said, the sanctions come into effect "in full."

NIS is majority owned by Gazprom Neft, which has a 50 percent stake, and Gazprom, which has a 6.15 percent stake.

The Serbian government holds 29.87 percent of the shares, while small shareholders make up the rest.

Serbia's oil industry was sanctioned by the United States Treasury Department on January 10.

The NIS company was sanctioned due to the so-called "secondary risk", meaning due to its connection to the Russian Gazprom.

Richard Verma, the US Deputy Secretary of State for Management and Resources, said in Belgrade on Saturday that Serbia would not face economic consequences if Russian ownership of NIS is removed./REL
