KFOR condemns the attacks on journalists in the north of Kosovo

The peacekeeping mission of NATO in Kosovo, KFOR, has strongly condemned the attacks on journalists in the municipalities in the north of Kosovo.

On June 16, journalists from various media, according to the Kosovo Police, "were physically attacked, in a brutal manner", while they were reporting from the municipality of Leposaviq, one of the four municipalities in the north, inhabited by a majority of Serbs.

"Media freedom and freedom of expression are fundamental values ??that must be respected by all. We call on all parties to refrain from further violence or from actions that could further escalate the situation and ensure that the media can do their fundamental duty safely," KFOR said in its response.

On June 16, journalists were covering the visit of the Minister of Local Government Administration, Elbert Krasniqi, to the mayor of Leposaviqi, Lulzim Hetemi.

According to the authorities in Kosovo, "individuals or criminal groups" also threw a device at them that is suspected to have been a shock bomb.

The Association of Journalists of Kosovo (AGK) has said that from May 26 to June 16, 30 attacks on journalists, cameramen and photojournalists were registered in the municipalities in the north of Kosovo.

Tensions in the north of Kosovo have increased since May 26, when the new Albanian mayors of the municipalities in the north, with the assistance of the Kosovo Police, entered the municipal buildings.

Tensions culminated on May 29, when Serbian protesters clashed with KFOR members in Zveçan. Dozens of people from both sides were injured in the clashes.

In the reaction of KFOR on May 17, it was said that after the incidents in Zveçan, the mission has increased its presence around the municipal buildings in the north to help prevent further clashes./ REL
