German Chancellor Merz: German Army will be strengthened to protect NATO
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz

During his first visit to the German Navy, Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed the country's commitment to strengthening military capabilities and supporting NATO in protecting the security and stability of the alliance. He emphasized the importance of preparedness in the face of daily threats from the Russian military.

"We are seeing ongoing activities by Russia that test our ability and readiness to defend ourselves," Merz said during a visit to the anti-submarine frigate Bayern off Germany's northern coast. The chancellor added that the country would continue to make every effort to protect the freedom and territorial integrity of the alliance.

"Our defense efforts have become more important since the start of Russia's war on Ukraine," Merz said, emphasizing that the security of Germany and NATO has gained a new priority.

During the visit, the Chancellor met with the Navy Commander, Jan Christian Kaack, in the port of Rostock and participated in the inspection of the new Naval Tactical Headquarters, which is responsible for planning and conducting naval operations and exercises for NATO.

The German navy, consisting of around 15,300 soldiers, is the smallest branch of the Bundeswehr, after the air force and army, but it plays an important role in strengthening the alliance's maritime capabilities. /CNA
