A wedding party in northern Turkey reportedly ended in tragedy after the groom was shot dead by gunfire at the ceremony just hours after the marriage ceremony.
The incident on Wednesday, August 27, in Sebinkarahisar, a town in Giresun province along the Black Sea coast.
The 23-year-old groom, identified as Ali Karaca, was shot while walking home with his bride, according to Anadolu Agency. The shots are believed to have come from a 47-year-old relative of the bride.
Karaca, who suffered critical injuries, was rushed to ?ebinkarahisar State Hospital, but did not survive despite intensive treatment.
Police arrested the woman shortly after the shooting and found two unlicensed handguns hidden in her garden. Prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the incident.
Although banned, firing guns at ceremonies remains a dangerous practice at weddings in some parts of Turkey, especially in rural areas of the Black Sea provinces. Authorities have repeatedly urged citizens to abandon the custom due to the high risk of accidental deaths and injuries. /CNA
