Turkish police have seized jewelry and antiques worth around 26 million euros from businesses in Istanbul's Grand Bazaar as part of an investigation into diamond smuggling.
The operation was launched after 10 suspects were initially detained for smuggling precious stones into Turkey, according to broadcaster CNN Turk. The origin of the diamonds is unknown.
On the orders of the Istanbul Public Prosecutor's Office, police raided 23 businesses in the 15th-century market, arresting 40 people.
Some 135 pieces of jewelry, 1,132 bars of precious metals and 267 historical objects worth 1.25 billion Turkish liras (26 million euros) were confiscated, according to reports .
The Grand Bazaar is one of the most visited tourist sites in the world and hosts thousands of small businesses.
