Von der Leyen: I am 'not available' for the German presidency

EU Commission chief von der Leyen says she is 'unavailable' for German presidency

The statement was made by a spokeswoman for the European Commission chief to European media, in response to German media reports linking her to this role.

Previously, Der Spiegel and Bild reported that government circles in Berlin believe that von der Leyen has a good chance of succeeding Frank-@alter Steinmeier, whose presidential term ends in 2027.

"President von der Leyen is fully focused on her duties as president of the European Commission. She is not available for other functions or positions," Paula Pinho, von der Leyen's spokeswoman, said in response.

German newspapers write that speculation is rife in Germany regarding potential candidates for the federal presidency.

Bild wrote that the main parties usually agree on a common candidate behind closed doors, making the election process predictable. Taking office could extend von der Leyen's political career, according to Bild./CNA
