White House fires CDC director, other officials resign from health agency

The White House announced that it has fired the director of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Susan Monarez, after she refused to resign on Wednesday.

In a statement, it was said that she was "not in line with the president's agenda" and had been dismissed from her position at the health agency.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services previously announced her departure, prompting a statement from Dr. Monarez's lawyers, who said she had not been notified of her dismissal and would not resign.

They said she was being targeted for refusing to "adopt unscientific and reckless directives and dismiss dedicated health experts" and accused Health Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr of "weaponizing public health".

"As her lawyer's statement makes clear, Susan Monarez is not aligned with the president's agenda," the White House said later Wednesday, adding that she had been dismissed from her position as director.

A longtime federal government scientist, Dr. Monarez was nominated by President Donald Trump to lead the CDC and was confirmed in a Senate vote along party lines in July./ CNA
