Israel opposes any interim deal on Iran's nuclear program

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Sunday that he opposes any interim deal reportedly being negotiated between the United States and Iran over Tehran's nuclear program.

Netanyahu made these remarks after media in Israel reported that there is an understanding between Washington and Tehran that they will aim to curb Iran's nuclear program to some extent in exchange for some sanctions relief. These reports could not be independently confirmed and the US has publicly denied any such agreement.

Neytanyahu said that Israel has informed the US that "the most limited agreements, the so-called 'mini-agreements' in our opinion do not serve the purpose and we are against such agreements".

Israeli officials believe that understandings have already been reached to limit uranium enrichment and some frozen funds have already been unblocked.

The Israeli portal, Walla, last week reported that some understanding had been reached for Iran to limit uranium enrichment to 60 percent in exchange for sanctions relief. This media also said that the parties are discussing the release of the prisoners.

Last week, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said there was "no deal", adding that these reports were untrue.

In 2018, the US withdrew from the 2015 deal between Iran and world powers aimed at curbing Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief.

Iran says its nuclear program has civilian purposes. But Israel considers Iran a major nuclear threat, seeking Israel's destruction and supporting anti-Israel groups throughout the region.

Israel does not exclude the possibility of military action to prevent Iran from possessing nuclear weapons./Rel
