Iran said it has arrested 10 militants suspected of being linked to the Islamic State (IS) militant group. They have been arrested on suspicion that they were planning to carry out attacks during religious rites during the month of Muharram, which began on July 30.

In a statement issued on August 4, the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence identified those arrested as "infidel Zionist terrorists" and accused Israel of employing them to carry out attacks.

This ministry did not publish the names of the suspected IS militants and also did not say in which detention center they are being held.

The statement, published by the Fars news agency, which is affiliated with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, said that explosive devices, communication equipment and weapons were found on the arrested persons.

The arrests were made in two locations, one in the west and one in the east of Iran. These operations were carried out in the last three days, the Ministry of Intelligence said.

Authorities in Iran said there was fighting at a location where the arrests were made, reporting that two Iranian intelligence agents were injured.

In recent years, especially after the armed attack on Iran's Parliament and on the tomb of Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini in 2017, Iranian institutions often report arresting IS militants before carrying out planned attacks.REL
