Ukraine said on Thursday it had repelled multiple Russian attacks in a strategically important area in the country's east, while NATO's secretary general said Moscow must not be allowed to win the war.
The Ukrainian military said on Thursday that Russian forces had launched at least two attacks in Pisky in the Donbass region, but added that Ukrainian troops had managed to repel them.
Russia's defense ministry on Thursday confirmed that its forces were on the offensive and had inflicted heavy losses on Ukrainian forces in Donetsk province, forcing the withdrawal of Kiev units.
Amid concerns among some politicians in the West that Russia's ambitions could extend beyond Ukraine, Mr Stoltenberg warned Russian President Vladimir Putin that the response to such a move by the Western military alliance would be overwhelming.
"If President Putin thinks of doing something similar to a NATO country as he has done with Georgia, Moldova or Ukraine, then all of NATO will be engaged immediately," he said.VOA
