Swedish military intelligence: The threat from Russia has increased

Russia poses a clear military threat in the area close to Sweden, but its forces are now engaged in the war in Ukraine, the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service (MUST) said on Monday.

"The security order in Europe, as we know it, has ceased to exist... that's why the risks for Swedish security have increased", said Lena Hallin, head of this Service, in a press conference.

Hallin has also said that he expects Russia to strengthen its military capabilities in the area close to Sweden, when possible, in response to Sweden and Finland's application for NATO membership.

She has said that the Swedish Military Intelligence and Security Service has assessed that Russia wants to avoid an escalation of tensions that could result in a conflict with NATO.

"However, there are many uncertainties, especially those related to the readiness of the Russian leadership to engage in major risks," she said, adding that high tensions could increase the risks of accidents, and that misjudgments could lead to conflict.

Russia's war in Ukraine started on February 24, 2022.

Russian President Vladimir Putin calls the war a "special military operation" to demilitarize Ukraine.

The West has responded to Russia, hitting the economy of this country with harsh sanctions.

As a result of the war, thousands of people have died and millions more have been displaced from their homes./REL
