The European Union on Monday imposed sanctions on two organizations and 32 Iranian officials, including the ministers of culture and education, intelligence officials and lawmakers, over allegations of involvement in Iran's brutal campaign against protesters.

The protests began after the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini on September 16 while she was arrested by the moral police of the Islamic Republic.

These protests have become one of the biggest challenges to Iran's theocracy since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

At least 529 people have been killed in the demonstrations, according to Iran Human Rights Activists. Over 19,700 others have been arrested by authorities as part of Iran's crackdown on protests. Several people associated with these protests have been executed.

The EU said it had imposed asset freezes and travel bans on 32 officials, as well as freezing the assets of two organizations because of their involvement "in serious human rights violations in Iran".

Previously, the 27-nation bloc had imposed four rounds of sanctions on Iranian officials and organizations - including other ministers, military officers and Iran's moral police - over allegations of human rights abuses./ Rel
