Five people were killed and 200 others injured when a vehicle plowed into a Christmas market in Magdeburg, in what local authorities classified as a "terrorist attack".

"Referring to the investigations so far, the background of the crime may have been dissatisfaction with the way refugees from Saudi Arabia are being treated in Germany" , said the Public Prosecutor regarding the serious incident. He said that the condition of the suspected perpetrator of the incident is being examined.

Horst Walter Nopens, senior public prosecutor, said the author acted alone. "Everything else about the motive is under investigation," he added.

Tom-Oliver Langhans, Director of the Magdeburg Police, expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to all the injured.

He clarified that the first emergency call was received at 19:02. "The caller initially assumed there was an accident, but this later turned out to be an assault scenario ," he said.

Meanwhile, the Magdeburg hospital in a recent announcement says "some patients had to undergo emergency surgery, some are now in the intensive care unit." Prof. Dr. Jörg Franke announced: "The good news, all 11 people seriously injured, they are now out of danger for life".
