2 American senators propose sanctions against Turkey related to actions in Syria

Two US senators introduced a bipartisan bill on Friday that would impose sanctions on Turkey, citing concerns about military action by that country or groups it supports in northern Syria.

Democratic Sen. Chris Van Hollen and Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham introduced the "Turkish Anti-Aggression Bill of 2024" in hopes that the sanctions warning would push the sides toward a ceasefire.

But they said Washington should work with Turkey diplomatically to enable a lasting ceasefire and a demilitarized zone between Turkey and Syria.

"These sanctions are aimed at preventing further attacks by Turkey or supported by Turkey against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which carry the risk of the re-emergence of ISIS, threatening the national security of the US and the rest of the globe," they said. them in a statement.

Hostilities in northern Syria have escalated since Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad was toppled almost two weeks ago.
