Anti-government groups gather in Madagascar/ Soldiers defy orders, join

Several groups of Malagasy soldiers have defied orders and joined thousands of anti-government protesters gathered in the island's capital Antananarivo, as demonstrations against the rule of President Andry Rajoelina continue.

Youth-led protesters entered the capital's '13 May' Square on Saturday for the first time in one of the largest rallies since a protest movement inspired by what has become known as the 'Generation Z protests' in Kenya and Nepal erupted on the Indian Ocean island on September 25.

After police used smoke grenades and tear gas to disperse the demonstrators, soldiers arrived at the scene, where they were greeted with cheers.

At a meeting at a military barracks on the outskirts of the city, soldiers in the elite CAPSAT unit, which played a crucial role in Rajoelina's rise to power in 2009, issued a rare public call for solidarity as demonstrators demanded the president's resignation.

"Let's unite forces, the army, the gendarmes and the police, and refuse to be paid to shoot our friends, our brothers and sisters," said the soldiers at the base in the Soanierana neighborhood. /CNA
