Germany temporarily lowers taxes on natural gas to ease consumers

Germany will temporarily lower taxes on natural gas, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has said.

This decision has been seen as an attempt to reduce the pressure on the residents of Germany, who are facing rising energy prices, since the outbreak of Russia's war in Ukraine.

Scholz has said that his Government has decided to reduce the value of the gas tax from 19 to 7 percent, until the end of March 2024.

"The increase in gas prices increases the pressure on many citizens", said Scholz, adding that additional measures will be made public in the coming weeks.
