Finland imposes restrictions with Russia / Closes four border points to stop

On November 18, Finland will close four of the nine border points with Russia, to stop the wave of asylum seekers, Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo has said.

The President of Finland said on November 15 that the increase in the number of asylum seekers appears to be Russian retaliation for Finland's cooperation with the United States in the field of defense.

Finland, a state of the European Union, which joined NATO this year, after many years of neutrality, has angered Russia, with which it shares a border of 1,340 kilometers.

This part of Finland's border with Russia also serves as the external border of the European Union.

The four border points that will be closed are in the south-eastern part of Finland and are among the busiest points for traffic between the two sides.

"The government has decided today that Finland will close some eastern border points. The eastern border points will be closed on the night between Friday and Saturday", said Orpo in a press conference.

This week, dozens of asylum seekers from Iraq, Yemen, Somalia and Syria have reached Finland in one day, via Russia.

The cumulative number of arrivals since September now stands at 280 asylum seekers, the Border Patrol Authority said Thursday.

Asylum seekers arriving via Russia from November 17 onwards will only be allowed to submit their applications at two northern border points, the Finnish government said.

About 3,000 people use the south-eastern border points of Finland on a daily basis.

Orpo said he understood that the border crossing closures would make everyday life more difficult for people allowed to travel between Finland and Russia./ REL
