Dozens of victims from the earthquake in Indonesia

An earthquake has struck the Indonesian island of Java, killing at least 44 people, reports AFP.

"There are dozens of people killed. Hundreds, maybe even thousands of houses have been damaged. So far 44 people have died," said Adam, spokesman for the local administration in the city of Cianjur on the island of Java.

While AP reports that the number of dead is at least 14.

The US Geological Survey said the 5.6-magnitude earthquake had its epicenter in the Cianjur region west of Java Island.

Indonesia was also hit by an earthquake in 2021.

While in 2018, in addition to the earthquake, this country was also hit by a tsunami, where more than 220 people died.

The 2004 tsunami, triggered by an earthquake near the Indonesian island of Sumatra, killed 226,000 people across the Indian Ocean, including over 120,000 in Indonesia.

Indonesia, an archipelago of 260 million people, is frequently hit by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and tsunamis due to its location on the Ring of Fire, which is an arc of volcanoes and tectonic plates in the Pacific Basin./REL
