The senior advisor of the US Department of State, Derek Chollet, called on Kosovo and Serbia on Tuesday to reduce tensions and return to the negotiating table for the normalization of relations. He made these comments on the X network, known until recently as Twitter, after talks with the Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti and the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic regarding the situation created after Sunday's attack on the Kosovo police in the north, by a armed group that killed a police officer.
"I talked with Prime Minister Albin Kurti about Sunday's terrible attack in Kosovo. I strongly condemn the violence against the Kosovo police and express my condolences for the loss of Sergeant Afrim Bunjaku. "Both sides must return to the dialogue mediated by the European Union and implement the Ohrid (agreement) commitments," he wrote.
While with the Serbian president Vu?i?, he wrote, "I spoke about the importance of the immediate expansion in the north of Kosovo and the avoidance of actions that could further increase tensions. The tragic loss of life underscores the urgent need to restore calm and return to EU-facilitated dialogue," Mr Chollet wrote.
The killing of a Kosovo policeman in Sunday's attack by an armed group that led to clashes in which three members of the group were killed has fueled fresh international concerns about the stability of the region.
The attack occurred in a period of difficult efforts to renew the Kosovo-Serbia talks, the last round of which, held on September 14 in Brussels, did not mark any progress.
The European Union with the support of the United States mediated in February in Brussels and then in March in Ohrid an agreement for the normalization of relations between the parties, but there was no significant step towards its implementation./ VOA
