Biden signs bill ending national emergency for Covid-19
President Joe Biden

President Joe Biden on Monday signed a House bill ending the Covid-19 national emergency, first passed during the Trump administration in 2020.

The White House initially announced plans to extend the national Covid-19 emergency, as well as the public health emergency, until May 11. But soon after, House Republicans introduced bills to end both at once. The bill the president signed Monday ended only the national emergency.

The White House expressed opposition to the bills, saying the resolutions "would be a grave disservice to the American people."

In an administration policy statement, the Biden administration said an abrupt end to the emergency would "create widespread chaos and uncertainty throughout the health care system."

The end of the national emergency will end some federal health programs intended to help health care providers during the height of the pandemic./ CNA.al
