Gaza flotilla activists return to Bilbao/ Physical clash with police at the

Clashes and strong tensions have been reported at Bilbao airport in Spain, during the return of several activists of the humanitarian flotilla to Gaza, leading to harsh police intervention and several arrests.

According to international media, supporters of the activists had gathered to welcome six people returning from Turkey, following their earlier detention by Israeli forces during a humanitarian mission to Gaza.

The situation escalated when a relative of one of the activists tried to approach them, but was forcibly stopped by the regional police. This led to clashes between the security forces and the attendees, with the police using rubber batons against some people.

Authorities reported that some activists had earlier blocked the exit of other passengers, necessitating police intervention to disperse them. As a result, four people were arrested for serious disobedience, resisting authorities, and assaulting police, including two of the recently returned activists.

Bilbao regional police have launched an internal investigation to assess whether the use of force was in accordance with official procedures.

Meanwhile, Amnesty International strongly condemned the incident, calling it an "excessive use of force" and demanding accountability for the police's actions. According to it, the footage does not justify the use of violence against people who had already been neutralized.

Following the incident, around 2,000 people protested in Bilbao to denounce the treatment of activists and police actions. The incident came at a time of heightened international tensions over the actions in Gaza and the reactions to activists involved in the humanitarian flotilla. /CNA
