Unusual heat wave in France/ One person dies

An unusual heat wave has swept through France. As a result, one person has died during a race in Paris and several others have ended up in hospital.

According to French emergency authorities, temperatures in Paris exceeded 30°C for the first time this year over the weekend, reaching as high as 31.9°C.

The Meteo-France meteorological service has described this situation as an "early and exceptional heat wave" coming from North Africa.

Authorities placed 13 regions in western France on a yellow heatwave alert, the first level of warning. It is the first time such a warning has been issued in May since the system was created in 2004.

In many areas of the country, temperatures exceeded 30°C, while preliminary data showed that at least 10 meteorological stations have broken temperature records for the month of May.

In the city of Brest, temperatures reached 29.8°C, breaking the previous record set in 2017. Forecasts show temperatures could reach up to 35°C in western France, while authorities warn that this heatwave could last for days to come.

Climate experts say these recurring heat waves are a clear sign of climate change, largely linked to emissions from fossil fuels, and that they are expected to become more frequent and intense in the future. /CNA
