Militant attack in Pakistan/ 7 soldiers killed, 17 others injured

Seven Pakistani soldiers were killed and 17 others wounded Saturday in a militant attack on a military post in Pakistan, the Pakistani military said.

"Terrorists rammed a vehicle packed with explosives into a post, then carried out multiple suicide bombings, causing part of the building to collapse," the Pakistani military said.

Residents in Pakistan's northern province of Waziristan, near the border with Afghanistan, said a powerful explosion shook the doors and damaged windows of their homes on Saturday morning.

The army said five soldiers died in the blast, while two others died in the ensuing gunfire. All six attackers were also killed, she added.

The army did not say which militant group carried out the attack. However, the newly formed militant group, Jaish-e Fursan-e Muhammad, claimed responsibility.

Pakistan's leaders, President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, condemned the attack and paid tribute to the soldiers killed in it.

North Waziristan has long been a hotbed of militant operations on both sides of the border. Pakistani officials say attacks have increased in recent months, most of which have been claimed by the Pakistani Taliban group, the TTP.

After the Afghan Taliban seized power following the departure of US-led forces from the country, many members of the TTP have found refuge in Afghanistan, using it to carry out frequent attacks on Pakistani troops and civilians.
