The Turkish seismologist, Naci Gyorur, has warned that Istanbul could be hit by a powerful earthquake.

According to him, the earthquake may have a magnitude of 7.2 to 7.6 on the Richter scale.

Gyorur warned the authorities in Istanbul to prepare the city during an interview with  TGRT Haber .

"There is the possibility of magnitudes 7.5 and 7.6... We know which parts of Istanbul will be most at risk in case of an earthquake. I hope that the Mayor of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality will do what is necessary to prepare the city for an earthquake. Among these requests are the details of the city. The city does not accidentally prepare for an earthquake. When it comes to preparing Istanbul for an earthquake, as a significant portion of today's politicians think, they immediately think of the building stock….

But it is not possible for Istanbul to prepare for an earthquake with a simple building structure. If you prepare all the elements of the city, the public, the infrastructure, the building stock, the ecosystem and the environment and the economy for an earthquake at the same time in an integrated way, you will have prepared the city for an earthquake," said the Turkish seismologist.

We recall that in February 2023, a catastrophic earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 leveled cities in the southeastern regions of the country and neighboring Syria, claiming more than 50,000 lives in Turkey and about 5,900 in Syria./ CNA
