Record in Europe/ Even in 2023, Albanian families spent almost 40% of the budget

There is an increasing trend for restaurants, hotels, furniture, while the weight for education and health has remained the same. The data were made known in the 2023 household budget survey, published by INSTAT.

In 2023, the average monthly consumption expenses for a Family Economic Unit, consisting on average of 3.7 people, are estimated at 91,675 ALL. This indicator is 3.7% higher than in 2022. The total expenses for consumption are about ALL 68.4 billion per month.

In 2023, the group with the highest increase in monthly expenses is "other goods and services", with 6.2%, compared to 2022, followed by the following groups:

- "alcoholic drinks and love" 5.6%.

- "ordinary furnishing and maintenance of the apartment" 5.1%.

According to the structure of average monthly expenses for consumption, the main groups are:

- The "food and non-alcoholic beverages" group, with an average monthly expenditure value of ALL 36,349, which accounts for 39.6% of the family budget.

The subgroups with the greatest weight in food expenses are:

- "meat and by-products" with 18.5%.

- "bread and cereals" with 16.5%.

- "vegetables" with 16.0%.

The group of "expenses for the apartment, water, electricity and paid rent" with an average monthly value of ALL 8,904, constitutes 9.7% of the total budget.

The "restaurants and hotels" group, with an average monthly expenditure of ALL 6,755, occupies 7.4% of the total budget.

In 2023, expenses for the "other goods and services" group increased by 6.2%. This increase came mainly from higher expenses for "personal hygiene", "aesthetic treatments" and "hairdressing and barber services". As a consequence, the weight of this group in the average monthly expenses of the IEF has increased.

Expenditures for "alcoholic beverages and tobacco" increased by 5.6%, compared to 2022, mainly due to the increase of expenditures for "alcoholic beverages" by about 8%.

Expenditures for "furniture, household appliances and apartment maintenance" increased by 5.1%, compared to last year. This increase came from higher expenses for "periodic services" (cleaner, gardener, etc.), "purchase of cooking equipment" and "various household repairs".

Average monthly expenses for consumption according to districts, 2023. In 2023, family economic units of Tirana district spend more on consumption, on average 108,098 ALL per month.

Other counties with high monthly consumption expenses are:

- Korça: 91,034 ALL.

- Durres: ALL 89,561.

The counties with the lowest average monthly expenses for consumption are:

- Kukesi: 73,225 ALL.
