Climate change will have numerous effects on different sectors of the economy, from infrastructure to energy or tourism.

But some other sectors could be hit even harder, with consequences that will affect sectors where a good portion of the population is engaged. The National Environment Agency's report estimates that agriculture and livestock will be two of them.

"So, in terms of agriculture, it is predicted that the yield of some crops will decline due to changes in temperatures and the phenomena brought about by climate change."

"Future climate change in Albania is expected to have significant effects on agricultural crop production. Particularly in lowland areas, corn yields are projected to decrease by 17% and tomato and watermelon yields to decline by 6-11%. In agricultural areas with limited irrigation opportunities or a complete lack of irrigation, alfalfa yields are expected to decrease by 6%, grape yields by 17-23%, olive yields by 11-20%, while wheat yields are expected to increase by 4-5%," the report states.

Regarding livestock, the consequences are also expected to be numerous, but especially some local breeds of small animals, sheep and goats are at risk of extinction.

"Local and rare breeds may become extinct as a result of the impact of climate change and disease epidemics."

Most small livestock, sheep and goats, are local Albanian breeds raised mainly in the grazing system and will be most vulnerable to climate change in Albania. Out of ten sheep breeds, three of them are at risk of extinction and out of 17 goat breeds, 10 of them are at risk of extinction. Climate change will negatively affect their level of risk,” the report states.

Likewise, livestock farming will also be affected by the decline in the yield of fodder that animals are fed, while beyond temperature changes, phenomena such as floods or fires also pose their own risks in this regard./ Monitor
