In 2024, a man in the country was paid an average of 79.3 thousand lek per month gross, an increase of 9.1% compared to the previous year. A woman received 75.4 thousand lek/month, or 10.6% more than in 2023. The data was released by INSTAT.
While women's average wages have grown faster than men's, the gap has narrowed to 4.9%, down from 6.2% a year earlier. This means that men are paid about 5% more on average than women. The gap remains wider than in 2021, when the gender pay gap hit an all-time low of 4.5%.
Although the gap has narrowed, there are only 4 occupational groups where women were paid more than men in 2024, down from 5 a year earlier. The occupations where women are paid more are:
Administrative and commercial managers; Legislators, senior civil servants and executive directors; Employees in electro-technology professions; Service and support workers.
Women managers are paid more
Although in most professions, women earn less than men, there is one category where they always dominate, that of managers, being even the highest paid of all.
According to INSTAT, in the “Administrative and commercial managers” profession group, women were paid an average of 214 thousand lek per month in 2024, an increase of 6% compared to the previous year. This is the highest paid profession group in the country. Compared to men working in the same profession (200.7 thousand lek), female managers are paid 6.5% more.
Even in the state, women are paid more. In the occupational group "Legislators, senior civil servants and executive directors", the average monthly salary of women was 118 thousand lekë, or 7.9% more than that of men in the same category.
Professions with the largest salary differences
The profession that pays women less than men is industry, with a difference of 29%, due to the physical difficulties of this activity, where men are naturally preferred.
Men in the industry are paid 71 thousand lek per month, compared to 50 thousand lek for women, with the latter being employed mainly in the textile and footwear industry.
Teaching skills in science subjects are valued less among women. The difference in the occupational group “Physical, mathematical and engineering science specialists” is 17%, with men being paid 107 thousand lekë and women around 88 thousand lekë per month.
Even in education in general, female teachers are paid 13% less than male teachers. There is also a large difference in health, with women being paid 94 thousand lek, or 15.6% less than men. The greatest equality in salaries is in personal and protection service employees (about 48 thousand lek each)./ Monitor
