Chromium continues to be the mineral with the greatest weight in the country in terms of the number of permits granted for exploitation, as well as the quantity produced by them.

The annual publication of the National Agency of Natural Resources, as a summary of the activity in the previous year, shows that a total of 920 thousand tons of chrome were produced, mainly oriented for export.

"Albania is known for its significant potential in chrome ore, compared to other Mediterranean and Balkan countries.

In the chrome mining activity, until 31.12.2023, there are 236 active exploitation licenses. Production activities are concentrated in Bulqiza district, with around 120 active permits, followed by Kukësi, Tropoja and Hasi.

By the end of 2023, 920769.98 tons of chrome ore was produced in this branch of the mining industry mainly for export.

The main chromium deposits are located in the Ophiolites of the Eastern Belt area, in the direction of Tropoja-Kukës-Bulqizë-Shebenik-Pogradec.

Less development in chromium deposits has been identified in the ophiolites of the western belt.

From a geological point of view, there are three main regions where chrome ore is found:

– Northeast Region (Ultrabasic Massif of Tropoja and Kukës);

– Central Region (Ultrabasic Massif of Bulqiza and Lura which is the most important);

- Southeast Region (Shebenik-Pogradec Ultrabasic Massif)" says the report.

The same publication informs that in 2023, 552 usage permits were active, mainly located in Bulqiza, Krujë, Berat, Tirana or Librazhd. In addition to chrome, which holds the majority of active permits, in second place according to AKBN's publication is limestone with 137 permits./ Monitor Magazine
