Electric cars/ China breaks the sales record, the European market stagnates

China contributed two-thirds of global electric vehicle sales in November, according to a new report.

November marked another record month for EV sales with 1.8 million units sold globally. November surpassed the previous record set in October. The Chinese market once again broke the previous record set last month (October) by over 50,000 vehicles, to reach almost 1.3 million units sold in November 2024.

According to the report, the EV market in the EU and EFTA region and the UK remains in decline, with sales down 3% in November compared to the same period last year. The region had 280,000 units sold last month, making it 2.7 million units sold year-to-date.

Meanwhile, Europe's biggest economies, including Germany, France and Italy, had weak year-on-year sales figures for electric vehicles.

According to European Automobile Manufacturers Association figures for October, sales volumes of electric vehicles fell by 4.9% year-on-year in the EU, while market share also fell to 13.2% from 14% last year. European carmakers are struggling with high production costs and increasing competition, leading some of the biggest carmakers to announce job cuts and plant closures. In the US and Canada, the electric vehicle market continues to grow at a steady rate of 10% this year./ CNA
