New study: Christopher Columbus' origins may be linked to Galician nobility

A new scientific study has shed light on one of history's greatest mysteries, suggesting that Christopher Columbus may have descended from Galician nobility in Spain, specifically from the Sotomayor family line.

The research, published as a preprint on the bioRxiv platform, was carried out by a team of researchers from the Citogen laboratory and the Complutense University of Madrid. The study is based on genetic analysis of human remains exhumed from a family crypt in Gelves, near Seville.

According to the results, there is genetic evidence linking descendants of Columbus to Pedro Álvarez de Sotomayor, known as Pedro Madruga, a powerful figure in 15th-century Galicia. The researchers reached this conclusion after discovering unexplained genetic links between the two historical individuals, which can only be explained by a common ancestor.

To verify the hypothesis, they used a genealogical computer model and a technique called “Virtual Knock-out.” When Pedro Madruga’s name was removed from the family tree, the genetic link between the individuals disappeared, making him the most likely candidate as an ancestor.

However, the researchers emphasize that this is indirect evidence and does not constitute a definitive conclusion, as Columbus's own DNA has not been analyzed. They call for independent verification and full publication of the data.

Meanwhile, the traditional theory that Columbus was born in Genoa still remains the dominant position in historiography, supported by the explorer's own statements in his will.

The debate over Columbus' origins continues, but this study marks an important step toward using modern genetic technologies to solve old historical mysteries./ Adapted from  CNA
