The largest flow of natural hydrogen gas ever recorded has been measured deep in an Albanian mine, writes "New Scientist" . The finding could help us figure out where to find underground deposits of this clean fuel.

"The bubble is really, really intense," says Laurent Truche at the University of Grenoble Alpes in France, who measured the gas in a pool of water nearly a kilometer underground. "It's like a jacuzzi," he said. 

Companies are now searching for deposits of natural hydrogen around the world as a source of clean fuel, but evidence for large accumulations of this "hydrogen gold" is scarce. 

In search of more substantial evidence, Truche and his colleagues went to the Bulqiza chrome mine in Albania, where hydrogen gas escaping from the rocks has caused several explosions. The mine is also located within an exposure of iron-rich rocks. 

The researchers found that the bubbling gas was more than 80 percent hydrogen, with methane and a small amount of nitrogen mixed in.

To determine the source of the gas, the researchers also modeled various geological scenarios that could produce such a flow. They found that the most likely scenario was that the gas came from a deeper reservoir of accumulated hydrogen in the mine. Based on the geometry of the fault, they estimate that this reservoir contains at least 5,000 to 50,000 tons of hydrogen./ CNA
