Arrested Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj is absent from the first session taking place on the merits.

According to reports, the Directorate of Prisons has been notified about Veliaj, while the mayor, through a statement, has emphasized that he will not appear as he has not yet had a preliminary hearing.

"We have not held preliminary hearings, we have not been given all the documents. My client should be familiar with the case materials. I have had contact with my client twice. The second time it was with serum. They gave you 65 thousand pages. The other time we only spent an hour talking about the case," stated lawyer Valentina Teodorescu.

 Veliaj's wife, Ajola Xoxa, who is represented by lawyers Maksim Haxhiaj and Dritan Jahaj, also did not appear at the hearing.

According to lawyers, Xoxa is unable to appear at the hearing because she is pregnant and her doctor has forbidden her to do so.

"Our client is unable to appear due to her condition, as she is pregnant. The doctor has forbidden her from moving," the lawyer is reported to have said./ CNA
