The British media "The Sun" has dedicated a long article to Dritan Rexhepi, who was extradited two days ago from Turkey to our country.
The British media compares Rexhep to El Chapo, the Mexican drug lord.
A former law student who flooded Britain with Class A drugs and killed two police officers has been extradited to Albania.
The notorious gangster Dritan Rexhepi - called the "King of Cocaine" - was on the run for 27 years and wanted in four countries, writes The Sun.
Further, the British media writes that the 45-year-old Rexhepi always stayed one step ahead of the law and managed to avoid capture and prison for many of the crimes committed throughout Europe.
Rexhep became famous for his prison escapes - boasting more than Mexican drug lord Joaquin Guzman Loera, better known as El Chapo.
He is also alleged to have ordered the ruthless revenge killing of the brother of a man suspected of stealing a £20 million cocaine shipment in England that belonged to Rexhep.
Drug kingpin Rexhepi appeared on the most wanted list issued by Scotland Yard in 2013, writes The Sun. He was believed to be hiding in the UK at the time.
But the Albanian government beat Italy, Belgium and Britain to capture Rexhep, who has now been extradited from Turkey.
A line of armed policemen met Rexhepi off the plane in Albania and then he was transferred to a prison.
He is accused of murder, kidnapping and execution of another Albanian, illegal possession of weapons and ammunition and drug trafficking.
The General Director of the Albanian Police, Ilir Proda, told The Sun: "The extradition of Dritan Rexhepi is a great achievement and shows the confidence of the Albanian police in our partners around the world.
At the same time, it is a great service for Albanian justice that sends a clear message - no wanted Albanian can think he is safe hiding abroad.
We want to thank our Turkish colleagues who made his extradition to our country possible.
This fugitive from justice was also wanted by Italy. It was a strong competition with Italy to extradite him."
Rexhepi's connections with the world of crime began in the 1990s, when he was still a teenager. He was suspected of working as a hitman - and was convicted of killing two policemen in 1998, but only now, 27 years later, was he caught by the Albanian police.
In 2005, Rexhepi appeared to try to turn his life around by enrolling in law school. However, just one year later, the suspected assassin was arrested while in a luxury hotel in Tirana with an illegal pistol and arrested by the police in Durrës.
For the first time, Albanian narcotics did not have to turn to representatives in Europe of South American cartels or Italian mobsters.
Drugs were shipped to Europe, entering through the ports of Antwerp and Rotterdam, while money was laundered through the Chinese fei ch'ien system.
Members communicated using encrypted services and held frequent meetings to devise new methods of transportation, avoiding the watchful eye of the police. Each member had to accept the implementation of certain rules, including revenge against the family in case of betrayal.
The leaders of the gangs engaged in the recruitment of young soldiers among Albanians abroad, especially in the Netherlands and Italy.
DRUG GANG DISCONTINUED
From behind bars, Rexhepi is accused of overseeing the kidnapping and brutal execution of another Albanian - Jan Prenga - in December 2019.
The alleged hit was suspected to be linked to the disappearance of a large quantity of cocaine in England.
In September 2019, a cargo ship carrying bananas left for the UK from the Ecuadorian port of Guayaquil.
But as well as the fruit, he was carrying a container full of cocaine worth £20m.
After she disappeared, Rexhepi accused rival Albanian gangster Ndrek Prenga, who was in Great Britain, of her theft.
For revenge, Rexhepi is suspected of having ordered a hit on his brother Jan, who disappeared a little later.
But in 2020, the Bello Company was cracked and dismantled by Europol thanks to the cooperation of 10 different countries.
Rexhepi was still in prison - but was released in 2021 and banned from leaving Ecuador.
He disappeared in Turkey and went off the radar for more than two years.
In November 2023, he was arrested in a rented villa in Istanbul and extradition proceedings began.
More than a year later, he is back in Albania - where he could face a long prison sentence for his crimes./ The Sun
