TikTok will face a fine from the EU for handling children's data

TikTok will face a fine for handling children's data in the EU, following a decision taken on Friday by the European Data Protection Board (EDPB), writes euronews .

The EDPB's decision means that the Irish Data Protection Commission will be able to issue a financial penalty within a month. Other EU data protection authorities had previously raised objections to the case.

The Irish regulator is the EU's main data protection authority in proceedings against TikTok, as the company's EU legal headquarters are located in Dublin.

The decision is part of an investigation launched in 2021 into whether TikTok breached EU data protection rules, known as GDPR, by failing to ensure that age verification processes sufficiently protected the privacy of children between the ages of 13 and 17 years old.

TikTok's level of transparency about how it processes children's data is also being investigated.

The Chinese-owned social media platform is used by more than 150 million people in Europe. Its parent company ByteDance reported revenue of $80 billion (€72.6 billion) in 2022.

In April this year, TikTok was fined £12.7 million (€14.7 million) by the UK data watchdog for unlawfully handling children's data, one of the largest fines of its kind.

The final decision on the sentence to be issued by the Irish Data Protection Commission is expected to be announced in September./ CNA.al
