Today marks 580 years since the Treaty of Lezha.

The League of Lezha was a military alliance that was founded in Lezha on March 2, 1444, with Skenderbeu as the head of the Arber provincial chiefs and Zetas (Serbs or Montenegrins) united against the Ottoman Empire.

The main members of the covenant were the Arians, the Balshays, the Muzakas, the Spans, the Zaharias and the Gyurashes. The Assembly of Lezha is appreciated as the starting point in the creation of an Albanian state.

History

After the death of the Serbian emperor Stefan Dušani in 1355, the arboretum magnates established their possessions. When the Ottoman powers entered Arberi, they were presented with small principalities engaged in small battles with each other. The first battle against the Ottoman powers in Arberia was fought by Balsha II, when another Arber feudal lord, Karl Topia, invited the Ottomans who defeated and killed Balsha II in the battle of Savra on September 18, 1385.

After establishing itself in the Balkans without much opposition from Christian nobles, the Ottoman Empire descended into internal wars. Many of the local nobles did not see it as an enemy power and continued to fight among themselves.

After years of service in the Ottoman ranks, in 1443 Skenderbeu deserted from the battle of Nis. After taking Kruja, he entered into negotiations with the Albanian nobles. With their help, Skenderbeu liberated a number of other castles. The possessions of many Albanian nobles were located in the liberated areas. To the north of the possessions of the Kastriots lay the possessions of the Dukagjins, the Zaharians, the Spans, the Dushmans and the Gjurashes, while to the south were the possessions of the Arians, the Topias, the Gropajs and the Muzakas. /CNA
