Tirana Mayor Erion Veliaj, who has been in detention for more than 14 months, will undergo a specialized cardiac examination this Wednesday, raising questions about whether this is a new strategy to secure his release.

This development comes after his legal appeals for release were successively rejected by the Special Court (GJKKO), the High Court, and the Constitutional Court.

"Ora News" learns that after a previous failed attempt to use a colonoscopy for similar purposes, attention has now shifted to a possible cardiac problem.

Transfer to the private Salus hospital for a coronary angiogram is being seen as a possible tactic to secure a medical report that could lead to the relaxation of the security measure.

Official sources from the General Directorate of Prisons have confirmed that Veliaj will be accompanied to the “Salus” hospital on Wednesday, May 6. Hospital sources also confirmed the appointment for a coronary angiography with the Italian specialist, Professor Zingaretti. Both institutions have officially accepted the planned visit.

The situation now depends on the outcome of the medical examination. It remains to be seen whether the mayor of Tirana has a real health problem or whether this check will be used as a tool to change his detention status.
