The next scandal/ Milk with carcinogenic toxins was consumed in Vlora

After the scandal with chicken tainted with salmonella and strawberries tainted with pesticides that were marketed in Albania, it has recently been confirmed that citizens have consumed milk tainted with aflatoxin.

A quantity of milk and its by-products contaminated with aflatoxin M1, a carcinogenic toxin that is very dangerous to human health, has been circulating in Vlora. The presence of the carcinogenic milk in Vlora is confirmed by the National Food Agency, reports A2 CNN.

After analyzing milk samples, the presence of aflatoxin was discovered in this product.

Of the 26 samples taken from January to April 2025, 10 of them tested positive and, according to specialists, nearly 40% of the milk tested was contaminated above food safety standards.

In the city of Vlora, 10 samples have been identified in the city's markets and supermarkets.

Based on the analyses conducted at ISUV, some milk samples have resulted in the presence of Aflatoxin M1. Present in milk, it is carcinogenic and genotoxic, while the risk is particularly high for children and regular consumers.

What is aflatoxin?

Aflatoxin is a toxin produced by a mold that grows on grains, corn, and wheat. When cows are fed contaminated feed, aflatoxin is then secreted into the milk they produce. Consuming milk contaminated with aflatoxin has serious consequences for human health. According to the WHO, aflatoxin is a Group 1 carcinogen, increasing the risk of liver and kidney problems.
