The head of the Freedom Party, Ilir Meta, appeared worried, reading with paper in hand his concerns about the increase in the cost of living.

Meta stated that the government has not taken any measures to increase fuel or food prices.

"The cost of living in Albania, the poorest country in the region, continues to rise every day.

The prices of food in the basket, that is, basic consumer products and not only, are much higher compared, not only to the neighbors, but also to the countries of the European Union. Although salaries and pensions in our country are several times lower.

Only in the month of December, food products increased by 6.7%, burdening family costs even more, especially for the most needy strata and those who survive on economic assistance.

Worrying is the fact that within the food group, the prices of vegetables have increased by double-digit levels to 20.8%, followed by fruits by 10.9%, milk, cheese and eggs by 6.7%, meat by 5.5%, etc. .

The increase in prices at these levels has not worried the Government, which has not taken any mitigating measures against the increase in the cost of living for the most affected social groups, such as pensioners, families on economic assistance or other social groups in need.

According to NUMBEO, the cost of living in Albania is today 17.5% higher than in North Macedonia and 27% higher than in Kosovo. While the average salary here is lower than in these two countries.

To understand how much Albanians are extorted every day by the Government and its oligarchs, who have monopolized every sector, I am bringing a simple comparison of some product prices in Albania and North Macedonia:

The price of fuel in Albania is 41% more expensive than in North Macedonia even though we are an oil producing country.

Vegetable prices are 25-30% more expensive, while fruit prices are 40-50% more expensive than in North Macedonia.

The price of meat in Albania is 10% more expensive than in North Macedonia. The price of eggs in Albania is 56% more expensive than in North Macedonia.

A responsible Government would have to react immediately, as is expected to happen in Greece where the Government has taken serious and tangible measures to reduce food prices.

The new measures that are expected to be voted on this week in Greece will consist of companies correcting their price lists.

The prices before and after the cuts will be published in order to ensure a transparency of the measures taken.

As announced by the Greek media, the Government will take measures to reduce prices by setting a profit margin limit and field inspections will be increased to prevent unfair benefits from price increases at the expense of citizens.

The impoverishment of every Albanian family and the concentration of the economy through the oligarchy has unfortunately been and remains the only economic goal of the Government," said Meta./ CNA
