The role of Fan Noli in the history of the Church/ His Beatitude Joan: An

His Beatitude, Joan also spoke in his interview about the figure of Fan Noli and his role in the history of the Orthodox Church. Archbishop Theofan Noli, Archbishop Joan, described him as a multifaceted figure to whom God had given extraordinary talents.

His Beatitude indicated that during his period of study in Boston, he came across texts written by Noli , which clearly showed that the church was the most important. Archbishop Joan says of Fan Noli that he has an invaluable contribution to church texts and the preparation of autocephaly.

" Monsignor Theofan Noli was a multifaceted figure. He was endowed by God with extraordinary talents. He was a poet, an unparalleled translator, a master of many languages, a good expert in music, especially religious music, a distinguished diplomat, a politician and above all a man of the church. He made an invaluable contribution to national awareness and the preparation of autocephaly, as well as of church texts.

When I was a student in Boston, together with Father Artur Liolini, we worked for some time in organizing the Fan Noli Library. There we also came across several texts written by him, which clearly show that for him the church was the most important thing. He wrote: “Of all my activities, my first love is the church”. While the translation and compilation of the Kremtores – a service book containing the psalms, odes and troparia of the Orthodox liturgical year – he called “his greatest pleasure” and “the work on which his greatest spiritual, literary, musical and intellectual efforts were concentrated”. Father Artur told me that Bishop Theofani often said: “If in political life my masterpiece was the admission of Albania to the League of Nations, in the field of letters my masterpiece is the Kremtores”.
