Plastic bags with a multi-use character have started to be collected by recyclers. The thickness of the bags makes it easier to collect and further recycle them, unlike what happens with thin bags, which are already prohibited by law.

"What the consumer throws away, we take as recyclers and this then turns into pipes or something else, but in Albania at the moment they make pipes. No one goes to collect the thin bag, now the collectors have no problem taking it and they are interested because it has more weight", said Elvis Sula, plastic recycler.

Recycling bags is expected to bring positive impacts on the environment. Yet a month after the law banning non-recyclable cash bags came into force, they are still in use.

For recyclers, the concern is not separating the waste at the source.

"As a recycler, I don't have to deal with 2,000 collectors, but there should be some points in Albania that do this, but since this doesn't happen in municipalities, we are forced to take people out", said Sula.

Plastic waste accounts for about 9% of the total waste generated by human and economic activity./euronews
