Putin accuses NATO/ Pursues "imperial ambitions"

Russian President Vladimir Putin said there would be "some tension" between Moscow and Sweden and Finland, as both countries have been formally invited to join the NATO military alliance.

Putin made the announcement on Wednesday evening during a visit to Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.

His comments followed a statement by NATO leaders that Russia "constitutes the most significant and direct threat to the security of allies and to peace and stability in the Euro-Atlantic area".

"Nuk ka asgjë për t'u shqetësuar në lidhje me anëtarësimin e Suedisë dhe Finlandës në NATO," u tha Putini gazetarëve në Asghabat. "Ne nuk kemi probleme me Suedinë dhe Finlandën, siç kemi me Ukrainën... Ato mund të bashkohen me çfarë të duan."

Sweden and Finland will join NATO

At the summit held on Wednesday, NATO invited Sweden and Finland to join the alliance, thus starting the process of joining the two Nordic countries. Helsinki and Stockholm have so far kept a military distance.

The expansion of the alliance will increase its land border with Russia by more than 1,300 kilometers./DW
