Money laundering/ British media: Drug lords are turning Tirana into Dubai

The British media " The Times " has written an article about money laundering by Albanian drug barons in the construction sector.

She reports that drug lords launder more than a billion euros a year in construction and property.

The article states that the money flows from Belgium, Spain, Holland, South America and Great Britain.

"Anyone who buys cocaine in Britain is most likely helping to turn Tirana into a mini-Dubai. 2.85 billion euros is dirty money, while 1.3 billion euros is money from drugs", write the British media.

They also write about the effects of crime on politics, emphasizing that "drug barons buy votes for 50 euros on behalf of their political friends".

The leader of the DP for Tirana, Belind Kelliçi, also spoke about money laundering.

He told "The Times" that money is not being laundered only by buying properties, but also by the firms that build them.

"This is the reason why there are companies that get permission to build buildings worth tens of millions of euros, which only have a declared capital of €1,000", said Kelliçi.

"Tirana had 8 thousand empty apartments in 2015. Ten million square meters of construction have been approved since then, and we now have 40,000. However, prices are increasing and an average couple now needs 64 lifetimes to save to buy a small apartment", continued the manager for Tirana.

The British media writes that "dirty money has fueled the demand for properties in Tirana", while emphasizing that apartment prices rose from 1,000 euros per square meter in 2017 to around 4,000 euros today./ CNA
