OSCE trains future judges and prosecutors on human trafficking

On December 4 and 5, the OSCE Presence in Albania and the School of Magistrates organized a specialized training on human trafficking, with a special focus on child trafficking. The training was based on the interactive format of a mock trial, providing 15 student magistrates with hands-on experience as they prepare for their future roles as judges and prosecutors.

“This mock trial – unique in both content and methodology – represents the culmination of a two-year project implemented by the OSCE Presence in support of the School of Magistrates,” said Ambassador Michel Tarran, Head of the OSCE Presence in Albania. "Supported by the governments of the United States, Norway and Italy, this initiative includes a comprehensive 'train the trainers' approach and is complemented by a manual specifically tailored to the Albanian context."

During the opening of the mock trial training, Arben Rakipi, the Director of the Magistrate School, emphasized the importance of integrating innovative teaching methods, such as court simulations, into the school's curriculum.

"Such innovative teaching methods equip student magistrates with valuable knowledge and skills for dealing with complex legal challenges efficiently," he noted.

Guided by senior legal professionals, practicing in simulated real court scenarios, participants gained essential knowledge about handling human trafficking cases with sensitivity and precision.

This initiative highlights the OSCE's commitment to strengthening the capacities of the judicial system and advancing the fight against human trafficking. By equipping future judges and prosecutors with experience and practical knowledge, it aims for a stronger judicial system response to this serious violation of human rights.
