The new EU entry-exit system begins operational this week

The EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES) will become fully operational as of April 10.

The system will replace passport stamping with digitally recorded entry, exit or entry refusals of non-EU nationals coming for short stays. The travellers' facial image, fingerprints and personal data from the travel document will also be recorded.

Since the launch of the EES, over 45 million border crossings have been recorded when travellers entered or exited a European country using the system. Over 24,000 people were refused entry for various reasons, such as inadequate justification for their visit, expired or false documents. The system also helped identify over 600 people who posed a security risk to Europe. They were refused entry and registered in the system. As a result, if they try to enter another European country using the system, border authorities will be able to see their previous refusal of entry.

Schengen countries have reported several cases where travelers were caught trying to cross under different identities. Recently in Romania, when border guards collected a traveler's biometric data, it was discovered that the same person was using two different identities with two separate documents issued under a different name. Further investigation showed that this person had already been denied entry to the Schengen area three times by different member states./CNA
