The British government has made public some new measures to fight illegal immigration, where the focus today is smuggling gangs and the increase in infiltrations. The Home Secretary will expand immigration detention centers as part of a plan to remove more than 14,500 illegal immigrants in the next six months. This is a higher rate than at any time since 2018, when Theresa May was prime minister.

Almost every day, migrants and asylum seekers arrive across the Channel on Britain's shores. Since the new Labor government took office on July 5, more than 5,700 people have reached Britain via this sea route.

Nearly 300 additional places will be created at two controversial immigration removal centers where illegal immigrants and criminals will stay before being deported. Around 300 Home Office caseworkers have already been redeployed since the election to track, stop and return illegal immigrants, The Telegraph reported.

Up to 100 new specialist intelligence and investigation officers are also being recruited into the National Crime Agency (NCA) to work with European agencies in targeting people-smuggling gangs.

The recently announced plans will be seen as an attempt to counter criticism that the scrapping of Rwanda's deportation scheme has left the UK without a barrier to combat small boat crossings. The fight against illegal immigration was one of the issues that dominated the election campaign for the July 4 general election, where the Labor Party returned to power in Britain after 14 years./ CNA
