Former Director General of the State Police, Veli Myftari, today revealed some unknowns regarding Albania in 1997, when criminal gangs spread throughout the country.

Invited to A2 CNN, Myftari revealed that during that period, three main gangs were operating, which spread among the people to create their own structures.

Linking it to the recent events involving former gang members, Myftari said that they are a continuation of the situation from about 30 years ago.

"In 1997, there were 3 main gangs. These arose as a result of the wrong actions of the time. The economic system was damaged, taking people's money with pyramid schemes... and the people rose up.

Albania was taken from 550 thousand weapons of that time and 4 billion cartridges. They were distributed among the people and when we were able to create the structures to collect these weapons, we returned only 1/3 of those weapons. The rest were trafficked. People got used to weapons in their hands. The weapons were taken by criminals, who perfected themselves in groups. In the middle of Elbasan, there was a war for 24 hours, as if we were in a frontal war. There were cases in Fier, in Shkodra.

"This is a continuation of that story that continues even today. This contingent that has the ability to kill was used for the events that we are witnessing today," said Myftari./CNA
