The passing of Nano/Ditmir Bushati: A man with a liberal worldview, intellectual

Former minister, Ditmir Bushati, shared a message today on the passing of former Prime Minister Fatos Nano.

Through a post on social networks, Bushati states that with his personality, Nano left deep traces.

Bushati emphasizes that Nano was a figure who will be remembered as a man with a liberal worldview, intellectual capacity, and a quick mind.

"Fatos Nano closed his eyes today forever!"

It is difficult to write about the life and political and state career of a personality like Fatos Nano. The description that former French President François Mitterrand gave to his political life as: "neither white nor black, but necessarily gray, with white and black threads", seems to apply to the political dimensions of Fatos Nano as well.

I am not a historian and this note does not undertake to provide a complete description of Nano's political and state legacy, his extraordinary intelligence and the unexpected turns of his career. However, I cannot avoid the fact that his personality left a deep mark on me. A man who, despite the many shades of gray that color his life, I am convinced that history will consider him a source of inspiration for all those who wish to build a democratic Albania.

Fatos Nano has the extraordinary merit of transforming the Socialist Party, from the most Stalinist party in Europe, into the only party in Albania with a vibrant democratic life. Despite the fluctuations of the SP during the first years of transition, in relation to NATO, the Council of Europe, the Balkans, or the dogmas of Marxism that were still in its program due to nostalgics of the past, Fatos Nano played an extraordinary role, even from the political prison where he unjustly stayed, to reform the SP in the right direction.

His liberal worldview, intellectual capacity and quick wit are symbolized by his motto: “to sacrifice power to make a state”. Fatos Nano shared power and responsibility with political figures within the party and the political spectrum from the center to the left. He did not succumb to the impulses of revenge against his political opponents nor against rivals or critics in the party. Fatos Nano achieved the peaceful handover of power for the first time, organizing free elections. Thus he established the institution of resignation and political responsibility, securing an important place in history.

Of course, his governance was not immune from the vices and corrosive phenomena of corruption and organized crime. But the country's democratic progress, the political agreements with the opponents who imprisoned him, which produced institutions with a broad political base, remain to this day the most irrefutable proof of Fatos Nano's invaluable contribution.

It is unfortunate that the SP and Fatos Nano failed to establish a healthy institutional rapport after his resignation in 2005. It would have been to the SP's honor to have him run for president in 2007 and 2012. Also, the younger generations in the SP should benefit from his political experience, as a sign of maturity and responsibility of a political force that builds generations of future leaders, appreciating political tradition and cementing critical thinking.
